Jurassic Park Day 2024

 

Surprise!  It was Jurassic Park Day!



Our room had been transformed into Jurassic Park!


Mrs. Wanke shared with us that the evil Victor Hoskins, hacked Jurassic Park's computers.  All the fences were down and we were locked out of the controls.  We had to work on site!  This was a dangerous task, since the dinosaurs were free to roam where ever!  We had to work quickly and quietly!   

Mrs. Wanke gave each of us our Jurassic Park Field Guide and headlamps. 





Our goal for the day was to, solve a series of tasks to obtain numbers. We would write these numbers on the Code Collector page of our Jurassic Park Field Guide.  Mrs. Wanke explained, once we had all the numbers she would input the numbers into a random number generator to see if any of the combinations would unlock Jurassic Park's computer system.  

Task #1: Dino Determination
We had to measure the lengths of the bones and record the lengths in our Field Guide.  Then, use those measurements to determine which dinosaur the bones came from. 

Task #2: Dinosaur Classification
We had to read the information about herbivore and carnivore in our field guides.  Then we had to look at the dinosaurs and determine if the dinosaur was a herbivore or carnivore.  


Task #3 Magnifying Words
We had to use magnifying glasses to read all the words that were hidden in the excavation picture and record them into our Field Guide.


Task #4 Scrambled Up Bones
We had to unscramble the sight words that were on the bone and record them correctly into our Field Guide.


Task #5 Paleontology Grid
We had to read the coordinates of various dinosaur bones that were found at the excavation site.  Then we had to glue pictures onto a grid in our field guide matching the coordinates.



Task #6 Excavating Missing Addends
We had to dig up the missing addend and match them to the correct equation. We had to record the results in our Field Guide. 


Task #7  
We had to read about a top new dinosaur breed that had been created at Jurassic Park.  Then we had to go back into the text and color code specific evidence and answer questions from the passage. 


We had so much fun and we worked SO very hard!  










At the end of the day we had gathered all the numbers.  We input the numbers into the computer.  The computer generated several possibilities and eventually we found a combination that worked.

March Math Madness

We have been working hard on subtraction with borrowing and regrouping.  This is hard and can get a little boring, so why not spice things up with a bit of March Math Madness!  Mrs. Wanke placed basketball cards with subtraction problems on the table.  We would pick a card and solve the problem.  






If we got the problem right we got to take a shot.  Only this hoop was a bit different, Mrs. Wanke's face was the backboard!


We all LOVED taking shots at Mrs. Wanke!  We wanted to solve as many problems as possible so we could take the most shots.  We sure loved when the basketball would hit "the backboard" a.k.a. Mrs. Wanke's face!

Leprechaun 2024


We arrived at school today to find that the leprechaun had been to our classroom and totally messed it up!


We check our traps, but no leprechaun.  The only thing left behind was his footprints!








When we came back from lunch we found a note left from the leprechaun. 


He had left us some gold candy and leprechaun juice to drink.  The letter said if our juice was sweet we had been good, but if it was sour we had been bad.  Check out another video!

March Math Fun

 


In math today we had some March filled fun. We rotated around to three different learning stations and to the guided math table. 

At the guided math table we worked on finding a missing number in a pattern.  We first used gold coins to determine what the pattern was. Then, we found the missing number in the pattern. 





At our first station we played place value basketball.  We had to throw 9 different basket balls into the three basketball hoops. (Hundreds, Tens, and Ones hoop)  After all 9 balls were thrown we had to count up the balls in each basket and then write the number.  





At another station we played the game Garbage.  For this game we had to pick a card.  Then, strategically place that card on the place value mat to build the largest number.  Once you placed a card, you could not move it.


The last station was a game to help us practice missing numbers in a pattern.  When it was our turn we would draw a card and find the missing number in the pattern.  If we were correct, we got to roll the dice and move our piece on the board.  



We had LOTS of fun in math today!
