Part, Part, Whole

Today in math we talked about how knowing that numbers can be broken down into to parts can help use find a missing addend.  We call this part, part, whole!

We started on the floor using a giant part, part, whole chart.   Mrs. Wanke would put the whole number in the top of the chart. Then she would show one of the parts with bugs on one side of the chart.  Then, we would come up and count on while placing bugs on the other side of our chart. This helped us find the missing part.

We continued working on during our guided math rotation to Mrs. Wanke.

She gave each of us our own part, part, whole mat with one of the parts missing.

We used candy corns to count on to find the missing part.  After find the missing part, we had to write the two equations that went along with our chart.

The best part about this activity was being able to eat the candy corns when we were done!

If Your Monster Won't Go To Bed

This week we read the story If Your Monster Won't Go To Bed.  This story gave us step by step directions on how to put our monster to bed.

We worked very hard on retelling this story with key details.  This is a SUPER important skill that all readers should know how to do.  We will be working on this all year.  For now, when we finish reading a book at home ask us to retell the story to you.   Here are copies of our anchor charts to help you know what we need to include with our retelling.

In math we played a game, Feed My Monster.  The thing about this monster is he only likes to eat combinations of 10.

First, we would flip over one card. Before we could flip over the second card, we had to tell Mrs. Wanke what number we would need to find next to make 10 for our monster.

If we found a match we fed it to the monster.  If we did not find a match, we had to turn both cards back over.

We loved feeding the monster!

Once we get really good at combinations of 10, we will use this to help us mentally make 20!   Stay tuned!

Fire Safety Week

This week we have talked about the importance of fire safety.  Today, the Pecatonica Fire Department and Sparky came to our school.   We were SUPER excited to shoot the fire hose!  Please make sure to talk as a family about your exit plan and meeting place if there was ever a fire in your home.

Wonderful Tradition

Every year Mrs. Gocken creates a giant chalk art whale for us. Each of us help to color the whale.  When we are done we took some pictures of us being shot out of the whale's spout.
