Guided Math FUN

Today we worked on decomposing various numbers into number bonds and writing the corresponding addition equations.  We started off as an entire class working around giant ten frame. Using red and yellow plates we made different combinations of 6 on the ten frame. Then, we transferred the information into a number bond.

During our groups we had some fun playing different games.  Some of us played Shaky Shaky Drop and others play a Memory game.

Shaky Shaky Drop
We had to shake a cup with two sided counters.  Then, we had to put that information into the number bond and write the corresponding addition equations.

Memory Game
We had to apply what we know about making combinations of 10 to making combinations of 20!

Hard Work Happening Here

We worked so hard learning how to work independently at our work stations.  Now we are able to start our guided group. This is when the magic happens and we can grow our brains!

Here are some snap shots from some of our guided math time.

In writing this week we reviewed why it is so important to put spaces between our words.  After writing, we left our binders out and the Writing Fairy came.  She left and M&M on every space we had between words in our writing.

Sometimes after hard work you just need to go outside and "hangout" for a bit!

Growth Mindset

This year the students and I are going to be learning about the Growth Mindset. This is the new term and buzz word going around in schools, but it has been apart of my teaching and philosophy for a long time. Only now it has a cool name and there are TONS of resources available for teacher and parents.    Coming home with your child will be some information about the Growth Mindset and ways that you can help your child understand this concept.
Below is a sneak peek at the documents that are coming home...if you are as excited as I am.

The Parts of a Letter Song....SOOOO not a boring song! :)

We sing this song every Friday before we write in our Friday Journals.  We LOVE to do it super fast!

Learning all the parts of our Reading Workshop!

One of the components of our Reading Workshop is reading with a partner. This is not only fun for us, but it helps us to develop our fluency.
We learned how to correctly pick a partner, how to sit when we read with a partner, and how to take turns reading the book.  Soon we will learn how we can ask comprehension questions with our partner after we read together.

  Check out these cute partners!

A "WHALEY" fun tradition!

It is a Wonderful Whale tradition to take pictures of us as if we are being shot out of a whale's spout.  On Friday, Mrs. Gocken help us continue this tradition.

We all worked together to create our giant whale!

We are one AWESOME class!
