September 11th

Today we discussed how September 11th is a sad day in American history.  We also talked about how Americans came together to support each other and ordinary people became heroes.

Next we watched a video of the story The Fire Boat.

You can watch the story.

Next, we talked with our partners about who our hero is.  So many of us shared that our moms and dads are our heroes.  We also talked about who our community heroes are. We learned that heroes are all around us and that WE can be heroes too, just by showing kindness and compassion towards each other.

An EGGcellent Lesson

Today Mrs. Christiansen had each of us pick out 2 eggs that looked different.

After we each had an egg, Mrs. Christiansen asked each of us to examine the outside of our eggs to see how they were different. She recorded our observations on the class chart.

After carefully observing the outside of our eggs. Mrs. Christiansen showed us how to crack our eggs open.  Then, she asked us to crack out our eggs.

Once we cracked open our eggs, she asked us to observe the inside of our eggs.  We shared that all of our eggs were the same on the inside.

Each of us recorded our observations and connected this learning to people. We learned that we all look different on the outside, but on the inside we are all the same.  This really helped us understand Dr. Martin L. King Jr.'s message further.

Gobble Untill Ya Wobble

We spent the week learning about Thanksgiving traditions.  We talked about football games played on Thanksgiving, wishing on the wishbone, pardoning the turkey, and of course the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

We read the story Balloons Over Broadway.  This story explains the history of Tony Sarg, an immigrant puppeteer who came up with the idea to have hot air balloons controlled by strings high up in the sky so thousands of people in the crowd could see them.

We also read a story called Thank you Sarah, The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving.  This story was about Sarah Hale. She wrote letters to presidents for 38 years asking for a national day of thanks. Finally President Lincoln agreed and declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.

To help us get in the feasting mood we watched Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and had "turkey legs" for a snack.  Ask your child what was inside the turkey leg!
