Apple Turnovers

We had lots of fun making some apple turnovers!  We thought it would be fun to sample some apple goodness after spending some much time learning about apples.  (Thanks Ag in the Class!) To make these, everyone got their own biscuit dough and flattened it out.  Then Mrs. S. and Mrs. Wanke came around and put some apple pie filling inside.  

We folded the dough over the filling and pinched the sides. 

The awesome kitchen staff baked these for us and even added a sweet drizzle to the top. 

Next came the best part...EATING TIME!

 

September 11th

 Today we discussed how September 11th is a sad day in American history.  We also talked about how Americans came together to support each other and ordinary people became heroes.  

Next we watched a video of the story The Fire Boat.

Next, we talked with our partners about who our hero is.  So many of us shared that our moms and dads are our heroes.  We also talked about who our community heroes are. We learned that heroes are all around us and that WE can be heroes too, just by showing kindness and compassion towards each other.

 One of my favorite things to do is take pictures of kids smiling, having fun and in their element.  Today we had SO much fun playing outside.  It was the perfect way to end another busy week in first grade.  I tried to run and get pictures of everyone, but first graders are really fast.

Number sense fun

 In math this week we worked on reviewing some concepts about numbers.  This might sound silly or way too easy for a first grader, but it was the perfect way to establish the same math foundation and to work on procedures and expectations.  

We started by playing a memory game.  Students had to work with their partner to match the number to the corresponding ten frame.  This was a great activity to also learn how to work with a partner.  

Later in the week, we talked about even and odd numbers.  We started off by watching a quick Brainpop Jr. about even and odd.  

Then, as a class we build a number line on the floor!  We couldn't believe it when Mrs. Wanke WROTE on the floor!  We used snap cubes to build each number.  We kept the snap cubes in pairs.  We learned that if the number had "partners" it was even, but it there was an "odd man out" the number was odd.
