Leapin Leap Day

We had a LEAPING good time today learning about leap year and playing some leap day games.

We watch a quick video clip that explained why we have a leap year.

We colored and read our very own leap year book.

In math we played several math games for leap day.  Most of the games helped us practice our skip counting.

One of the games we played was a skip counting game.  We started on a lily pad 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.  Then we had to hop to a lily pad with a number that was 4 more.  We had to keep hopping to lily pads with numbers that were 4 more.

We played other games that helped us practice 10 more and 10 less, counting on and counting back and making equal equations.

Class T-shirts 2016

We got our class t-shirts and we love them!

Our goal is to wear these shirts every Friday and any time we go on a field trip.

WAY TO GO BRI!

Bri was voted the January star student for behavior.  Who will be the February winner?

Bri even chose to share her cookie with her classmates.  Now that is generous!

Tropical Island Day

Today was Tropical Island Day!  We had so much fun.
We started the day off by learning a  little bit about the Hawaiian Islands.  Ask your child to share with you what they learned.
We then watched Lilo and Stitch with Mrs. Smallwood's class.  Mrs. Wanke gave us our Hawaiian names also.  Her name was Mrs. Lala.

At lunch everyone got a slushy!  YUMMY!

In the afternoon we made our trail mix and learned how to hula dance.  The hula dance was much more popular that the tropical trail mix.

Here we are pretending to be surfer dudes with our reading buddies!

Getting inside the characters head.

Today we read the story The Recess Queen.  Before reading the story, we asked ourselves, what would Mean Jeans new year's resolution be?

After we read the story, we decided that Mean Jean learned that it was more fun to play with her friends than it is to be mean with them.  So we decided that her new year's resolution would be to be nice to people at recess.

We used the app Chatter Pix to create a talking Mean Jean, who was able to tell us her resolution.

This app is free and fun and kid friendly.

Check back to see what other things our book characters might say as we get inside their heads!

Happy New Year

We had a wonderful week back to school. We started our week with a poem called New Year's Resolutions. Many of us were quite curious as to what a new year's resolution was.

New Year's Resolutions

Just think, think, think,
Of things you can do,
To make yourself better,
Before the years through.
Resolutions can be tough,
Or simple as can be.
Making Resolutions,
Are good for you and me!
So what will you promise,
To help yourself, my dear?
Through 2016
Have a happy, new year!

After reading this poem we decided that a resolution is a promise to yourself that will help you become a better person or that will help others.

Later in the week, we read a book called Squirrel's New Year's Resolution.  This gave us some examples of resolutions. We started planning what our new year's resolution could be.

We worked hard on our planning and writing. We made revisions and edited.  Next week we will begin writing our published copy!  We are so excited to show you our finished copy!
