Turkey Turkey Turkey

Last week we learned about turkeys. So this week we thought we would have a little turkey fun! On Monday, all the first graders rotated to each first grade classroom to do an activity.  In Miss Miller's room we made apple turkeys. In Miss Brown's room we painted a turkey craft. In our room, we had a turkey STEM challenge.

MISSION:
Turkey escaped the farm and he is coming to our thanksgiving dinner. Design a chair that can support the weight of our turkey guest.

RULES:
1. Structure must support 3 pounds
2. Structure can bend
3. Structure must be at least 1 inch off the ground even if it bends and can not break.
4. Must use only the materials given.

MATERIALS:
1. Small and large popsicle sticks
2. Clothes pins
3. Binder clips

Everyone was not successful building a structure, but EVERYONE learned perseverance and teamwork skills!

On Tuesday we played a math called Gobblin' Up Missing Addends. Each pair had a turkey, chips, and a recording sheet. Partners took turns making the turkey "eat" some of the chips while the other partner hid their eyes. When the partner turned around they had to write a missing addend equations with the chips they saw, then they had to count on to find how many chips the turkey ate.

Fact Families

We started working with fact families!  We watch this short video that explains fact families with a turkey sandwich.

Then during Guided Math with Mrs. Wanke we play frozen facts.  We would roll a dice 2 times to determine the parts of the ice cream number bond. Then, we put the parts together to come up with the whole.  We used those three numbers to write all the facts for our fact family.

To makes things harder, Mrs. Wanke pulled out dice with larger numbers and she even gave some of use large missing part ice cream number bonds where we had to find the missing part, then write the facts.

Writer's Cafe

We have been working very hard on editing our writing.  Today we celebrated all our hard work with Writers Cafe.

Our room was transformed into a little Cafe.

We each took turns being the Chef!

We got to "serve" up our writing to each table.   After we were done sharing our writing, our friends took turns complimenting the Chef's dish.

Mrs. Wanke was so proud of all our hard work. We put a Published Writing ribbon on our pieces to share with our families!
